Black Trans Lives: Past, Present and Future

Let’s talk the intersection of race and gender identity! There is a long history of Black + queer + transgender trailblazers that often gets ignored in larger discussions of LGBTQ+ identity. We will break down intersectionality, LGBTQ+ History, why Black Trans lives matter and discuss tangible solutions to support Black trans people in increasingly challenging times.

Why should your company/organization educate your team on transgender people – particularly when it comes to workplace inclusion?

  • According to a 2021 Gallup poll, 68% Americans believe they have never personally met anyone who is transgender. That means the majority of the public’s education and awareness about transgender people has been informed by more than a century’s worth of media which has overwhelmingly misrepresented and mischaracterized who trans people are–significantly influencing public perceptions, policy, and attitudes about the trans community. (GLAAD)

  • According to 2021 data from leading workplace think-tank and consulting firm, McKinsey, Transgender people are vastly underrepresented in the U.S. workforce.

  • Recent research from McKinsey shows that nearly 30 percent of transgender people in the United States are not in the workforce, and are twice as likely as the cisgender population to be unemployed.

  • The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is mapping the escalating attacks on LGBTQ+ peoples rights in U.S. State Legislatures, there are currently 505 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in the U.S. The majority of these bills specifically target transgender people and are designed to heavily restrict, or in some cases completely eliminate, transgender peoples access to gender-affirming healthcare, reproductive healthcare, inclusive education materials, harassment/bullying protections, access to public facilities and take away basic civil liberties.

The good news is you can begin to change the narrative around transgender inclusion, identity, and employment access at your company or organization
